Not everyone falls asleep easily while others have trouble sleeping for longer time. According to recent medical advice, it is best to refrain from using sleeping pills for a longer time period. A professor from the University of California located in San Francisco, Dr. Michael Incze who is also the co-author of the medical publication, said that the latest studies revealed that patients nowadays are becoming more and more in tune to using sleeping pills without knowing that there are associated side effects to the drugs which are alarmingly serious.

In the previous year, a recommendation was made by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine regarding some type of psychological counseling referred to as cognitive behavioral therapy also known as CBT. This is the first treatment that is used for people suffering from insomnia. After this treatment, prescription is given along with over-the-counter drugs. The main focus of CBT is to determine patterns when the patient is thinking as well as behavioral patterns that hinder a person from getting a good night’s sleep.

Chronic insomnia is suffered by around 10 per cent of people in America while 30 per cent are diagnosed to have only the temporary symptoms. Incze added that patients who are used to drinking sleeping pills should be more motivated to have a discussion with their medical practitioner regarding the deeper reason why they are suffering from insomnia or sleep deprivation.
