Using Illustrations In Design
As the old saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words”.
Design is very much aware of how true this old adage is, as they’re reliant on visual representations on a daily basis. It’s the point of their jobs, after all.
Graphic design and illustration

There are a lot of ideas that can be told via copy or text, and some of them only need that text. However, some ideas need visual representation. Photos can handle a lot of these occasions, but more abstract ideas need a good illustration to get them shown off and visually represented.
It doesn’t have to be fancy, illustrating numbers or bullet points can already do a lot to emphasize something.
Photos work best when it comes to representing realistic topics. But if it’s an ambitious topic, like futuristic concepts or characters, then illustrations are the better options. While photos are an option in this situation, there’s a lot of work that goes into that, not least of which include extensive Photoshop work.
Telling a story
There are a lot of characters or journeys that demand to be told. When it comes to design, telling the story of the brand or the design aesthetic really helps sell it all.
That’s where illustrations come in, creating characters in order to deliver a message. Illustrators like Maria Rabinky know that illustrations don’t have to be “childish” or “cartoony”, their style and aesthetic can be made to fit the story, brand, or the client needed.
Pie charts and bar graphs are useful, but they can be rather boring. This is where illustrations can come in, and deliver data in a visually appealing and interesting way. This is the idea behind infographics, which are commonly used to show off data in a fun manner.
